Socio-economic reality of informal caregivers in Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) projects that the population over 60 years of age in Latin America will double by 2050. This aging population will increase the demand for informal caregivers (ICPs), mostly family members and women, whose work remains socially undervalued. The purpose of this study is to analyze the devaluation of the work of ICPs caring for older adults in the municipality of Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca, from both economic and social dimensions. The study adopts a mixed-method (quantitative and qualitative) approach, using a descriptive design. Questionnaires were administered to 30 ICPs to explore sociodemographic variables, motivations, and caregiving challenges. Data was processed using Excel, SPSS Statistics, and Atlas.ti. Key findings include: 56.7% of ICPs do not feel recognized by their families, 76.7% perceive social devaluation, and 100% lack institutional recognition. 56.7% do not have recreational time, and 30% experience frequent isolation. The main needs expressed are training (30%), financial support (23.3%), and emotional support (20%). The findings highlight the structural invisibility of Indigenous and Peasant Women (IPWs) and the urgent need to implement comprehensive public policies that improve their quality of life and recognize their essential work.
