Living with HIV: a scoping review of life trajectories and transformations of subjectivity

The diagnosis of HIV has a profound impact on the lives of those who receive it, not only at the biological level, but also in psychosocial and subjective dimensions. This scoping review aimed to trace and analyze the scientific production published between 2017 and 2024 that directly or indirectly addresses life trajectories and the transformations of subjectivity in people living with HIV. Full-text scientific articles in Spanish or English were reviewed, derived from the social sciences, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and health. Qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and review studies were included, provided they contributed to the categories of living with HIV, subjectivity, life trajectories, and psychosocial factors. A total of 49 articles were identified, with qualitative studies predominating to the focus of the research, particularly in Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico. The main topics addressed were stigma, discrimination, life narratives, family relationships, the body, and identity. Greater production was identified around populations living with HIV, with emphasis on stigma, discrimination, narratives, and everyday life. The findings reveal that living with HIV is a transformative experience of subjectivity, self-image, and life trajectories, and that it needs to be understood beyond the biomedical approach. It is recommended to expand research toward marginalized groups and to strengthen dialogue between the social sciences and health sciences in order to advance toward a comprehensive approach to HIV.
