Beyond the left-right divide: characterization of the political-ideological axes of Dominican society

This research is conducted within a context of low party polarization and scant ideological differentiation among Dominican political elites in the 21st century. The primary objective was to characterize the axes of political divergence within Dominican society by mapping sociopolitical and value-based variables that underpin a latent ideological polarization beyond traditional left-right labels. The study posits that the programmatic convergence of party elites does not reflect social consensus but rather masks heterogeneous political-ideological identities. Using data from the 2024 Latinobarómetro survey, a valid analytical subsample (n=308) was selected through a rigorous listwise deletion process to ensure high informative density in the active variables. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Hierarchical Ascendant Clustering (HAC) were applied. The results identify two main axes of tension: one sociopolitical (values and sociocultural order) and another democratic-racial. Furthermore, four distinctive clusters (K=4) were identified, evidencing a fragmentation rooted in clashing visions of civil rights, religion, and nationhood. The study concludes that Dominican political conflict has shifted from traditional partisan militancy toward value-based cleavages and disputes over the model of society. These findings reveal a latent social polarization that, while omitted from elite discourse, manifests in segregated citizen identities with conflicting views on civil rights, nation, and democracy. This fragmentation suggests that current parties operate as containers for diverse ideological worlds that formal electoral offerings fail to fully represent or channel.
