Open-access Artificial Intelligence as a Catalyst in Transforming Higher Education

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping higher education by introducing innovative solutions that personalize learning, optimize institutional management, and enhance academic research (Aguado-García et al., 2025). Presented at the CITICED 2025 Congress at the Universidad Católica del Cibao (UCATECI), this paper examines AI’s transformative impact, emphasizing its ability to tailor educational content to individual needs, automate administrative tasks, and streamline research through AI-driven assistants. However, its adoption raises critical ethical challenges, including data privacy, algorithmic bias mitigation, and the need for transparency in design and use (UNESCO, 2021; OECD, 2024). Through a comprehensive review of current applications, such as adaptive learning platforms (Canvas LMS, PowerSchool), chatbots (Jill Watson), and research assistants (Crow, Falcon, Owl and Phoenix), the benefits and limitations of AI compared to human intelligence are explored (Alenezi & Wardat, 2025). The study concludes that responsible AI integration requires ethical frameworks, clear institutional policies, and teacher training in digital competencies. This work advocates for critical dialogue to align AI with human values, ensuring equity and trust in educational technology and positioning it as a cornerstone for the future of higher education.
